Ceint

/seɪnt/ adjective

Definition

Archaic past participle meaning girded or encircled; having been bound with a belt or sash.

Etymology

From Old French 'ceint,' past participle of 'ceindre' (to gird), derived from Latin 'cingere' meaning 'to surround' or 'to belt.' Same root as modern 'cincture.'

Kelly Says

This word is almost extinct in English, but it survives in heraldic descriptions where you might see a lion 'ceint' with a crown—a remnant of how medieval writers described ceremonial dress!
