Chenet

/ˈʃɛnət/ noun

Definition

A decorative metal support or stand used to hold logs in a fireplace; an andiron.

Etymology

From Old French chenete, related to Medieval Latin cattīna. The word comes from the same root as 'chain' and refers to the metal framework.

Kelly Says

Beautiful chenets were status symbols in medieval homes—families would display ornate brass or iron ones shaped like animals or mythical creatures to show off their wealth while keeping their fires safely contained.
