Definition
A small domed pavilion or decorative roofed structure used in Indian architecture, often built as a memorial or temple ornament.
Etymology
From Hindi chhatri or Sanskrit chatra (umbrella), referring to the umbrella-like shape of the dome, a term that became prominent in English descriptions of Indian monuments.
Kelly Says
Chhatris dot the Indian landscape as memorials to warriors and royalty—they're technically cenotaphs (empty tombs), and their umbrella-shaped domes originally symbolized a ruler's protection over their people.
