Chilies

/ˈtʃɪliz/ noun

Definition

Small, hot peppers that are used as spices in cooking.

Etymology

From Nahuatl (Aztec) 'chilli,' borrowed into Spanish during the conquest of Mexico, then into English and other European languages in the 16th century.

Kelly Says

Chilies didn't exist in Europe, Africa, or Asia until Columbus brought them from the Americas—today the spiciness chemical (capsaicin) is found in billions of meals worldwide because of a 500-year-old exchange.
