Definition
A strict enforcement of rules or sudden, forceful suppression of something; a crackdown.
Etymology
Compound of 'clamp' (to press/squeeze tightly) and 'down' (downward pressure). Emerged in early 20th-century journalism to describe government or authority enforcement; the metaphor is of clamping something in place so it cannot move.
Kelly Says
The word became popular during Prohibition and labor disputes when authorities used literal police force—'clampdown' captures both the mechanical action and the authoritarian intent in one vivid image.
