Clotbur

/ˈklɒtbɜr/ noun

Definition

A prickly seedcase or burr of certain plants, especially those that stick to cloth and animal fur; or the plant bearing such burrs.

Etymology

Compound of 'clot' (a lump or cluster) and 'bur' (prickly seedcase). Old English and Germanic roots; the term has been used since medieval times to describe adhesive plant parts.

Kelly Says

Clotburs inspired Velcro—in 1941, George de Mestral returned from hunting covered in burrs, examined them under a microscope, and saw tiny hooks that could be mimicked with nylon, accidentally inventing one of the most useful fasteners.
