Definition
A family of prehistoric fish with hollow spines that were thought to be extinct until a living specimen was discovered in 1938.
Etymology
From Greek 'koilos' (hollow) + 'akantha' (spine) + '-idae' (family suffix). The name describes the distinctive hollow fin spines that distinguish these fish from other species.
