Definition
In colonial organisms, a single cell or unit that has the ability to develop into or form part of the larger colonial structure.
Etymology
From Greek 'koinos' (common) + 'blast' (germ or bud). The term describes primitive cells in colonial development.
Kelly Says
Coenoblasts reveal something astonishing: some organisms can sacrifice individuality for the good of the colony—like millions of cells agreeing to become parts of something larger.
