Definition
The process of adding color to something that was originally in black and white, such as old films or photographs.
Etymology
From 'colorize' + '-tion' (suffix forming nouns of action). The term gained popularity in the 1980s when technology made it possible to color old black-and-white movies.
Kelly Says
Colorizing old films is controversial because artists must guess what colors were actually there—and different people's guesses can completely change how we remember historical events like the moon landing.
