Definition
In a way that is bright, vivid, and full of color; with lots of interesting and varied details.
Etymology
From 'colourful' (adjective meaning full of color) + '-ly' (adverb suffix). The word 'colour' comes from Latin 'color,' and the suffix '-ful' means 'full of,' making 'colourful' mean 'full of colour.' The '-ly' ending converts it to an adverb.
Kelly Says
Interestingly, the British spelling 'colourfully' with a 'u' versus the American 'colorfully' reflects a historical divergence that happened after the American Revolution, when Noah Webster deliberately simplified spellings—but the '-ful' suffix always doubles in some words and not others depending on stress patterns!
