Definition
The roof space or attic of a building, especially in French architecture; also used as a verb meaning 'to fill up or complete.'
Etymology
From Old French comble, from Latin cumulus meaning 'heap' or 'pile.' In architecture, it refers to the uppermost peaked part of a roof structure where materials accumulate.
Kelly Says
French architects distinguished between different roof spaces—'combles' are specifically the peaked attic areas where heat rises, making them prized spaces that were often rented separately!
