Definition
Plural of concetto; elaborate and fanciful ideas, images, or comparisons used in Renaissance and baroque poetry, often creating striking or surprising intellectual connections.
Etymology
Italian plural of concetto, derived from Latin conceptus (a conception). This literary term was borrowed directly from Italian during the Renaissance when Italian poetry dominated European literary culture.
Kelly Says
A concetto might compare a lover to a ship lost at sea or turn a sigh into a physical weight—these aren't simple metaphors but intellectual gymnastics that make you pause and think 'oh, I see it now!' Medieval poets built entire reputations on clever concetti.
