Definition
Plural of condor, the large bird of prey.
Etymology
From Spanish 'cóndor,' borrowed from Quechua 'kuntur' (the Andean language of the Inca). The word entered English in the 17th century through Spanish colonial contact with South America.
Kelly Says
The word 'condor' traveled from Quechua through Spanish into English, making it a linguistic trace of colonial encounter—and it's one of the few English words borrowed directly from indigenous Andean languages that we use regularly today.
