Convection zone

/kənˈvɛkʃən zoʊn/ noun phrase

Definition

The region within a star where energy transport occurs primarily through the bulk motion of hot gas rising and cool gas sinking, rather than radiation. In the Sun, this zone extends from about 70% of the solar radius to the surface.

Etymology

From Latin 'convectio' meaning a carrying or bringing together, from 'convehere' meaning to carry together, combined with 'zone' from Greek 'zone' meaning belt or girdle. The term describes the physical process of heat transport through fluid motion.

Kelly Says

The convection zone is like a massive cosmic lava lamp where hot plasma bubbles rise to the surface in columns thousands of kilometers wide, cool off, then sink back down in a continuous churning motion that takes about a month to complete one cycle! This turbulent mixing is what drives the solar magnetic dynamo and creates the beautiful granulation pattern we see on the Sun's surface.
