Definition
In linguistics and phonetics, the shortening of a naturally long vowel in pronunciation, often due to stress or position in a word.
Etymology
From Latin correptiō, derived from corripere (to seize, shorten), combining cor- (together) and rapere (to seize). Used in classical philology and linguistics since the medieval period.
Kelly Says
Correption is why we pronounce vowels differently in different positions—the vowel in 'divine' is long, but in 'divinity' it gets shortened due to the stress pattern shifting, and linguists have names for all these tiny pronunciation tricks!
