Definition
Plural of coryphaeus; the leaders or principal dancers/singers in an ancient Greek chorus.
Etymology
Latin plural of coryphaeus, from Greek koryphē. In ancient theater, the coryphaeus was the leader of the chorus who represented a major role.
Kelly Says
In ancient Greek theater, the coryphaeus was the star of the chorus—the one who got to lead the singing and dancing, basically the ancient equivalent of a backup dancer getting the spotlight!
