Definition
The same as covelline; a blue-black copper sulfide mineral (CuS) commonly found in copper ore deposits.
Etymology
Alternative spelling of covelline, derived from Italian mineralogist Michele Covelli; the -ite suffix is the more common mineralogical naming convention for minerals.
Kelly Says
Museums prize covellite not just as a mineral specimen but as a historical artifact—pieces from Vesuvius in the 1800s are prized by collectors as connecting us to the era when mineralogy was just becoming a science.
