Definition
A member of a Native American people of the Pacific Northwest, or a thick hand-knitted sweater in the style traditionally made by these people.
Etymology
From the Cowichan First Nations of British Columbia. The Cowichan people developed distinctive knitting techniques and wool sweaters as part of their material culture. When European traders encountered these sweaters, they named them after the people who made them.
Kelly Says
Cowichan sweaters represent an incredible cultural blend—Indigenous weaving traditions combined with European wool and knitting techniques to create something entirely new and now celebrated worldwide as authentic Pacific Northwest craft!
