Definition
To overindulge in eating or drinking, especially alcohol; to become drunk or suffer from the effects of excessive consumption.
Etymology
From Latin crapulatus (drunk), derived from crapula. Emerged in English in the 17th-18th centuries as a learned, formal term.
Kelly Says
This verb is a marvel of forgotten vocabulary—'to crapulate' is the perfect formal term for binge drinking, but it fell out of use as slang took over. Its revival would confuse most speakers!
