Cree

/ˈkri/ noun

Definition

A Native American people originally from Canada and the northern United States; also refers to their language.

Etymology

From French 'Cris,' which came from the Cree word 'Kininimoag' (human beings). The term has been used since French colonial times, though the Cree people have their own distinct names for themselves in their language.

Kelly Says

The Cree are one of the largest Indigenous groups in North America with a rich history of trading, diplomacy, and adaptation—they were early partners in the fur trade but also fiercely resisted colonization. Their syllabic writing system, invented in the 1800s, is unique among Indigenous languages and made literacy possible without learning European alphabets.
