Definition
A member of the family Apodidae, commonly known as swifts, small aerial insectivores distinguished by their extremely short legs and powerful wings.
Etymology
From Greek kypsele (small box) + -id (member of family), because the bird family resembles a box-like or compact form; named in the 19th century during systematic bird classification.
Kelly Says
Swifts are aerial virtuosos—they can fly at speeds over 100 mph, catch insects mid-air, and spend nearly their entire lives flying, even sleeping and mating in flight; some species barely touch ground for months except when nesting.
