Cystic

/ˈsɪstɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to or characterized by cysts, which are closed sacs containing fluid or semi-solid material. Most commonly known in the term 'cystic fibrosis'.

Etymology

From Greek 'kystis' meaning 'bladder' or 'bag', plus the suffix '-ic'. The medical term developed as understanding of cysts and related conditions advanced in the 19th century.

Kelly Says

The Greek root 'kystis' originally just meant 'bladder', but medical terminology expanded it to describe any bag-like structure in the body. Cystic fibrosis, despite its name, doesn't actually involve cysts but was named for the scarred appearance of affected pancreatic tissue.
