Daiquiri

/ˈdækəri/ noun

Definition

A cocktail made with rum, citrus juice, and sugar, typically served cold; originally from Cuba.

Etymology

Named after Daiquiri, a beach near Santiago de Cuba where American soldiers were stationed during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The drink was invented there and named after the location when American soldiers brought the recipe home.

Kelly Says

The daiquiri's origin story shows how casual drinks become legendary—it wasn't invented by a famous bartender, but by soldiers looking for refreshment near a beautiful beach. The frozen daiquiri version came much later and is actually pretty different from the original simple cocktail.
