Datil

/ˈdætɪl/ noun

Definition

A type of desert palm tree found in the southwestern United States and Mexico, also spelled 'datal' or 'datile'; related to the date palm but distinct.

Etymology

From Spanish 'dátil' (date), which comes from Latin 'dactylus', from Greek 'daktylos' (finger)—a reference to the finger-like appearance of date clusters.

Kelly Says

The datil palm produces small date-like fruits that Native American and Mexican populations have relied on for centuries, making it a crucial desert food source that remains largely unknown outside the Southwest.
