Definition
A Scottish land measurement unit used historically, equivalent to roughly the land needed to support a family or produce a certain amount of grain.
Etymology
From Scottish Gaelic 'davach,' possibly related to 'dabhach' meaning a tub or vessel for grain measurement. The term evolved to measure the land producing that amount.
Kelly Says
Scotland's 'davach' is a rare example of a measurement named after what it produces—medieval farmers literally measured land by 'how many tubs of grain it grows,' turning farming into a mathematical system.
