Definition
To dislocate or put out of joint, particularly referring to a limb moving out of its socket.
Etymology
From French 'deboîter' meaning to dislocate, derived from 'de-' (reverse) and 'boîte' (box, joint). The term originally referred to the literal displacement of bones from their jointed positions.
Kelly Says
This French medical term shows how the language of joints comes from boxes—because a joint is essentially nature's hinge box, and when it 'exits the box,' you have an injury.
