Definition
A class of arthropod animals commonly known as millipedes, characterized by having two pairs of legs attached to each body segment.
Etymology
From Greek diplo- (double) and pous (foot), with the Latin feminine ending -a. The taxonomic class name was formalized in the 18th century when scientists recognized this anatomical distinction as a key classification feature.
