Dissava

/dɪˈsɑː.və/ noun

Definition

A governor or regional administrator in Sri Lanka during the colonial period, below the rank of viceroy.

Etymology

From Portuguese diceador or similar colonial administrators' titles, adapted into English through direct contact with Sri Lankan administrative structures. The term reflects the blending of Portuguese, Dutch, and English colonial terminology.

Kelly Says

The dissava was essentially a middle manager of colonialism—powerful locally but answerable to European powers above. Their history reveals how colonial systems created new hierarchies that didn't match traditional structures.
