Dollia

/ˈdɒliə/ noun

Definition

A genus of large sea snails with distinctive spiral shells, belonging to the family of marine gastropods.

Etymology

From Latin 'dolium' (a large earthenware vessel or barrel), named for the snail's barrel-shaped shell. The scientific name was given by naturalists in the 18th century who noted the resemblance to ancient Roman storage containers.

Kelly Says

Dollia snails have shells so large they can reach 8 inches long, and some species have been used as natural trumpets by Pacific islanders for centuries—nature's original musical instruments!
