Dunne

/dʌn/ noun

Definition

A dull grayish-brown color, or sometimes a variant spelling of the color 'dun.'

Etymology

From Old English 'dunn,' possibly from Old Norse 'donn' or related to Sanskrit 'dhúman' (meaning 'smoke'). The color was named after the dull brown-gray appearance of smoke or earth.

Kelly Says

Dun-colored animals (like dun horses or dun deer) have this color as natural camouflage in rocky and sandy environments—the color is so effective at blending in that 'dun' became a military camouflage color in World War I.
