Duodenotomy

/ˌdjuːoʊdəˈnɑtəmi/ noun

Definition

A surgical operation in which a doctor makes an incision or opening into the duodenum to remove stones, foreign objects, or to treat other internal duodenal problems.

Etymology

From duodenum plus -tomy (from Greek tome, 'a cutting' or 'incision'). Unlike -ectomy (removal of entire organs), -tomy simply means making a cut to access or repair internal structures.

Kelly Says

Duodenotomy is actually a pretty risky surgery because the duodenum is packed closely with blood vessels and the pancreas—surgeons have to be incredibly careful not to damage the pancreatic ducts that run right through it, or the patient faces serious complications.
