Definition
A person who manufactures dyes, either natural dyes extracted from plants and minerals or synthetic chemical dyes.
Etymology
From dye plus maker, a compound that emerged with the professionalization of dye production during the medieval period and expanded dramatically with industrial chemical synthesis in the 19th century.
Kelly Says
The best dyemakers were incredibly valuable—they kept their formulas secret, and some family dye-making businesses guarded their recipes like national treasures because they could command premium prices.
