Definition
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, often described as feeling 'air hungry' or unable to get enough air. Can result from heart, lung, or other systemic conditions.
Etymology
From Greek 'dys' (difficult, bad) + 'pnoia' (breathing). The term has ancient origins in Greek medicine, where physicians recognized difficult breathing as a key symptom. Hippocrates described various forms of dyspnea, and the term has remained largely unchanged for over 2000 years.
Kelly Says
Dyspnea isn't just about oxygen levels - you can have normal oxygen but still feel short of breath! The sensation comes from multiple sensors throughout your body detecting changes in breathing effort, carbon dioxide levels, and chest wall mechanics.
