Earplug

/ˈɪrplʌɡ/ noun

Definition

A small soft or foam object that you insert into your ear canal to block out sound or keep water out.

Etymology

From 'ear' plus 'plug' (from Dutch 'plog' or similar origins). The modern foam earplug was invented in the 1960s and became essential safety equipment for protecting hearing.

Kelly Says

Foam earplugs are so effective that they're one of the few products where cheaper isn't worse—the basic $0.10 foam earplug blocks sound nearly as well as expensive custom ones because the foam's structure, not cost, does the work.
