Eching

/ˈɛtʃɪŋ/ noun

Definition

The process of creating designs or patterns on a surface (usually metal or glass) by using acid or other corrosive substances to eat away parts of the material.

Etymology

From Dutch 'etsen,' derived from German 'ätzen' meaning 'to eat away.' The word entered English in the 17th century when the printmaking technique became popular in Northern Europe.

Kelly Says

Rembrandt was a master of etching, creating some of history's most valuable and expressive artworks by carefully controlling how acid bit into copper plates—it's a technique that blends chemistry, artistry, and patience!
