Definition
Past tense of edify; instructed or improved someone morally or intellectually; elevated someone's mind or character.
Etymology
From the verb edify, derived from Old French edifier, from Latin edificare. The past tense edified has been in use since at least the 15th century and is much more common than the archaic edifice as a verb.
Kelly Says
Edified is the verb form people actually use—'I was edified by that lecture'—whereas edifice got locked into noun-only duty, showing how the same Latin root split into different parts of speech over centuries.
