Definition
A collection of pus in a body cavity, especially between the lung and its surrounding membrane.
Etymology
From Greek 'empyema,' literally meaning 'suppuration' or 'formation of pus,' derived from 'en-' (in) and 'pyon' (pus). The term became standard in medical terminology for identifying serious infections.
Kelly Says
Empyema is a crucial diagnostic concept in medicine because it describes a specific, treatable complication of pneumonia or lung infections—before antibiotics, doctors had to drain these collections manually, and the term helped them distinguish it from other types of fluid around the lungs.
