From Greek enkhórios, from en- (in) + khóra (country, land). The word evolved from geographical terminology into English to describe indigenous or native things.

Ancient Egyptians had 'enchorial script'—a writing system used locally—but scholars had to learn the more formal hieroglyphic script to understand official documents, showing how writing systems had class divisions!
