Enki

/ˈɛŋki/ noun

Definition

In ancient Mesopotamian mythology, the Sumerian god of water, knowledge, crafts, and wisdom.

Etymology

From Sumerian 'En-ki,' literally meaning 'lord of the earth' (en = lord, ki = earth). This is one of the oldest named gods in human history, appearing in cuneiform texts from around 2400 BCE.

Kelly Says

Enki is one of the most fascinating gods in mythology because ancient Sumerians credited him with giving humans civilization itself—he's the god of both water (essential for agriculture) and wisdom (essential for society), showing how the ancients understood that survival and culture are connected.
