Enthymeme

/ˈɛnθɪˌmim/ noun

Definition

A type of argument or logical statement where one of the premises is implied rather than stated outright.

Etymology

From Greek enthymema, meaning 'argument held in the mind,' from en- ('in') + thymos ('mind' or 'thought'). Aristotle used this term for informal reasoning.

Kelly Says

This is why ads like 'Real doctors choose our brand' work so brilliantly—you supply the missing premise yourself: 'What real doctors choose must be good.' The listener does the logical work, making them more convinced.
