Definition
A rare or archaic term referring to the area surrounding something, or the state of being surrounded.
Etymology
Formed from 'environ' (to surround) plus the suffix '-age' (denoting a state, condition, or collection). Similar to how 'parentage' means the state of being a parent, 'environage' meant surroundings.
Kelly Says
The '-age' suffix creates abstract nouns from verbs, and 'environage' shows how English speakers once casually created new words to mean 'the surrounding-ness of something.' It's like how we say 'coverage' or 'drainage' today!
