Definition
In ancient Greek temples, an inner chamber or vestibule located above or beyond the main naos, serving special ceremonial purposes.
Etymology
From Greek epi- (upon, over) + naos (inner chamber of a temple). An architectural term for secondary sacred spaces.
Kelly Says
Parthenons and other Greek temples weren't simple boxes—they had layered sacred spaces, and the epinaos was an exclusive upper chamber that only priests could access.
