Definition
Plural form of epinicion; songs, odes, or celebrations commemorating victory, especially in ancient Greek contexts.
Etymology
From Greek epinicion, from epi- 'upon' + nike 'victory.' The word originally referred to victory songs sung by returning warriors or at athletic competitions.
Kelly Says
Ancient Greeks had a whole genre of songs called epinicia just to celebrate winning—imagine if we had formal victory songs after every sporting event! These weren't just any songs; they were expensive, elaborate poems that made you famous.
