Definition
Enamel, especially decorative enamel work on metalware; an archaic or variant spelling of enamel.
Etymology
From Old French 'esmail,' from Frankish '*smeltan' (to melt). This term was used for the glossy coating created by fusing glass-like substances onto metal.
Kelly Says
Medieval craftspeople created stunning enameled jewelry and vessels, and the word 'esmayle' survived in English long after the technique became standard—it's like how we might still say 'to embroider' even though embroidery itself is ancient.
