Definition
A book or collection containing the four gospels of the Christian New Testament.
Etymology
From 'evangel' plus the suffix '-ary' (relating to or containing), following the pattern of Latin-derived nouns like 'dictionary' (book of words) and 'bestiary' (book of beasts).
Kelly Says
Medieval monks would illuminate these books with extraordinary artwork—'evangelaries' are some of the most beautiful handwritten manuscripts in existence, like the Book of Kells.
