Explorers

/ɪkˈsplɔrərz/ noun

Definition

People who travel to unfamiliar places or investigate unknown territories, ideas, or phenomena to gain new knowledge or make discoveries.

Etymology

From Latin explorare meaning "to investigate, search out", literally "to cry out" (ex- out + plorare to cry), originally referring to hunters calling out to scare game from cover. The sense evolved to mean systematic investigation by the 16th century.

Kelly Says

The word's etymology reveals that exploration was originally about making noise to flush out hidden things, which beautifully parallels how modern explorers still "flush out" hidden truths from the unknown. From Magellan to Mars rovers, the essence remains the same: venturing into the uncertain to bring back knowledge for humanity.
