Definition
The outer curved surface of an arch or vault, as opposed to the inner surface (intrados).
Etymology
From French 'extrados,' from 'extra-' (outside) + 'dos' (back, from Latin 'dorsum'). The architectural term emerged in the Renaissance when describing classical arches more precisely.
Kelly Says
When you walk under a beautiful old stone arch, the part you see from above is the extrados, and it's structurally elegant—the weight of the arch is actually distributed along this outer curve, making it look decorative but doing serious work.
