Fesse

/fɛs/ noun

Definition

A horizontal band across the middle of a heraldic shield, dividing it into upper and lower sections.

Etymology

From Old French 'fesse,' derived from Latin 'fascia' meaning 'band' or 'stripe.' The term entered heraldry in medieval times to describe one of the most common charges (decorative elements) in coat-of-arms design.

Kelly Says

The fesse is so fundamental to heraldry that it appears in hundreds of famous coats of arms across Europe—it's basically the horizontal stripe that helped nobles identify each other in battle when faces were hidden by helmets.
