Definition
Toward or in the direction of a field; moving toward open fields or agricultural land.
Etymology
Compound of 'field' and '-ward' (Old English 'weard,' direction or position). The suffix '-ward' attaches to nouns to indicate direction, as in 'forward,' 'backward,' 'toward,' and was productive in Old and Middle English.
Kelly Says
The suffix '-ward' is one of English's most economical word-builders—by adding it to any location word, you instantly create a directional adverb, which is why archaic English could say 'cityward,' 'churchward,' or 'fieldward'.
