Filibeg

/ˈfɪlɪˌbɛɡ/ noun

Definition

A short kilt or pleated skirt worn as part of traditional Scottish Highland dress.

Etymology

From Scottish Gaelic 'feileadh-beag' (little kilt), where 'feileadh' means fold and 'beag' means small. Developed in the 18th century as a shortened version of the longer plaid garment.

Kelly Says

The filibeg is actually a modern invention—the longer plaid called the 'great kilt' is older, but Scottish Highlanders adapted it into the shorter kilt we know today, making it easier to move around in battle and labor.
